It’s no surprise that artificial intelligence remained a top storyline over the last 12 months. Agencies detailed 1,000 more use cases in the most recent update from the Office of Management and Budget.

But the 1,700 use cases alone don’t explain why AI continued to dominate the news, the sessions at nearly every federal conference and on Capitol Hill. One of the reasons agencies and industry were so excited about the potential and real capabilities of AI last year had more to do with all the work that these organizations had done over the previous decade. The focus is on the data and its governance. The move to the cloud to modernize systems and applications. Basically, the lead up to taking AI from an idea or concept to the pilot stage, which happened in the 2010s, made these capabilities possible in 2024.

1)AI Proves Useful for Ovarian Cancer Diagnosis

AI can outperform human doctors when it comes to identifying ovarian cancer from ultrasound images.

A new study published in the journal Nature Medicine shows that specially trained AI program achieved an accuracy rate of more than 86% in identifying ovarian cancer by scanning ultrasounds, compared to just under 83% for human experts and nearly 78% for non-expert examiners.

2)Revolutionizing Brain Diagnostics with Light and AI

A new “molecular lantern” technique allows researchers to monitor molecular changes in the brain non-invasively using a thin light-emitting probe. This innovative tool utilizes Raman spectroscopy to detect chemical changes caused by tumors, injuries, or other pathologies without altering the brain beforehand.

Unlike prior methods requiring genetic modifications, this approach analyzes natural brain tissue with high precision, offering significant potential for diagnosing and studying brain diseases. Future developments aim to integrate artificial intelligence to enhance diagnostic accuracy and explore diverse biomedical applications.

3)AI-driven adaptive cardiovascular devices show “personalised medicine shift”

The emergence of adaptive cardiac devices, especially those that utilise AI, is propelling the wider industry shift towards personalised medicine, according to GlobalData.

“The cardiovascular devices market is undergoing rapid expansion and diversification. AI-enhanced solutions exemplify the industry’s shift toward precision medicine, aligning with regulatory bodies like the FDA prioritising innovative approaches to improve outcomes in cardiovascular disease management,” says GlobalData medical devices analyst Cynthia Stinchcombe.

Adaptive cardiac devices have been identified as a revolutionary approach to heart disease treatment. Unlike traditional pacemakers, adaptive devices work by dynamically adjusting to a patient’s condition. This can be in the form of a coronary implant, such as Elixir Medical’s DynamX bioadaptor, or an AI-driven device that analyses heart activity and adjusts treatment based on fluctuations.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the first artificial intelligence agents might enter the workforce this year as his company inches closer to developing humanlike artificial general intelligence (AGI).

“We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents ‘join the workforce’ and materially change the output of companies,” said Altman in a blog post titled “Reflections” on Jan. 6.

AI agents or agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that exhibit autonomous decision-making and goal-directed behavior. They can autonomously understand complex goals, make decisions, take actions with minimal human intervention and execute multi-step reasoning processes.
